Express Chocolate Cake

29 Jul

What can I say? It is still raining. And what comes with the rain? An inexplicable urge to eat lots and lots of comfort food. So basically the rain is the main raison why I lost my bikini figure 10 days before my beach vacation.

But do we get all gloomy? No! Do we start a new diet/workout? No!

We bake a delicious chocolate cake and indulge ourselves. Because after all that’s what life is all about and not about starving yourself! ;-)

You need:

  •   100g of dark chocolate
  •   100g of butter
  •   175g of sugar
  •   2 eggs
  •   125g of flour
  •   Some unsweetened cocoa (optional)

Here it goes:

Melt the chocolate with the butter and stir till it becomes a homogenous liquid. You could go all romantic and do so in a bain marie (water bath) but I’m quite practical and not a very patient person so I use my microwave ;-) I know Sophie Dahl would kill me for that.

In the meantime you blend the sugar into the eggs until it gets this creamy texture.

Then you add the egg-sugar mix to the chocolate and stir till fully blended and then add the flour. Don’t forget the flour!!!

If you like you can add some cocoa to make it more chocolaty or use less sugar so it’s not too sweet.

Once the batter is done, butter a  round form and put the cake into the oven at 250°C for 8 minutes. You heard me right. This lovely cake takes all together (from the very start till the point where you can eat it) 15 minutes and tastes delicious.

If you don’t want your cake to be creamy in the inside (which is the actual point of this cake)  leave it a few minutes more (check with a knive).

You can eat it like this (warm!) or serve it with vanilla ice cream.

PS: I promise to make a nicer picture next time I bake it.

A little piece of summer

24 Jul

Well I don’t know where you are at the moment, but where I am it is grey and raining all day long.  Come on it is mid July!!! It is supposed to be 30°C outside but instead I feel as being in autumn. I miss running around in my summer dress, drinking cooling cocktails on a terrace and reading a book in my hammock. Instead I am sitting in my kitchen wearing a warm sweater and fluffy socks.

Socks!!!! I hate socks!

Apparently the weather is not getting better any time soon so I have to find ways to at least pretend it is summer. Here are some ideas if happen to have the same problems as I have.

First, use a monoï-scented shower cream. It smells lovely and it reminds me of all those summers spend in the south of France. For your hair, use a coconut scented shampoo. Personally I’m not a big fan of the chemical smell of coconut. Instead I use coconut oil (native, cold pressed, unrefined) on my hair to fight split ends. Its scent is much more delicate and actually smells like fresh coconut. Here comes the best of it: you can cook with it too!!! How about some homemade green chicken curry?

Then you can always watch all those movies that make you feel sunny (don’t ask me why, but the first that comes to my mind are all those Elvis Presley movies in Hawaii and Acapulco…).

Well to this point we have smelled and seen summer but what about the taste?

Personally I am a huge fan of Italy. And every time I go there, the first thing I eat is: Spaghetti Vongole!!! (Clams Spaghetti)

It is absolutely divine, it tastes like heaven and summer combined. And only when I have this first bite of al dente cooked spaghetti with white wine sauce and clams I know I am on holidays. Of course they taste better when you are sitting on a nice little terrace in Rome, sun shines on your back, and you are wearing your favourite vintage sunglasses and a light summer dress with matching wedges. But hey, that first bite… you close your eyes and it is summer all over again!

PS: Please forgive the horrible pics taken with my phone, but my camera died ad I have to get a new one.

The Cluedo Kitchen

21 Jul

Remember I told you this was about making my dreams come true? Well I had some dreams about my kitchen. Two precisely. One was that I wanted a mocca-coloured kitchen (I mean the walls), but because of my anger outburst a few years ago it ended up being pink… Another dream was to have a black and white Cluedo floor.

Remember that board game Cluedo? I loved that kitchen. So I wanted that same exchequer floor.

And guess what?

I got it!!! I love it! It looks great and it took me years to find the floor in the internet. Every time I watched a movie they had a black and white kitchen floor and I got frustrated because I couldn’t find mine. Apparently it was “too old-fashioned”.

Come on! That’s the whole point about that kind of floors and it fits perfectly well into my cheesy 60s kitchen.

Aubergine Gratin

17 Jul

Yeah well, I know it is not very orginal… but it is delicious ;-)

And anyway, the point is; it is quick, it is easy, it is tasty…

You need (for one person):

- 1 mid-sized aubergine (eggplant)

- some feta cheese

- olive oil

- salt, pepper and herbes de provence

Here it goes:

Cut the aubergine into equal slices. Put them into the gratin form and salt them (takes out the water of  the aubergine). Then sprinkle some feta cheese on top (yeah I know… I love feta cheese) and dripple some olive oil on it before putting the herbs and some pepper. Put it in the oven (if you have a grill use it.. makes the cheese all golden) at 225°C  for about 20 minutes. This tastes good alone or with a nice piece of grilled meat.

Love Story

11 Jul

Did you know that Shakespeare never mentioned a balcony in his play Romeo and Julia???

Anyway, I think that the balcony adds a lot of romance to the drama. Don’t you think that balconies are just divine and make you dream? To me every balcony has a story and this is why I am so obsessed with them. Maybe someday I’ll show you my own balcony. ;-)

There is so much that can happen on a balcony: breakfast with loved ones, drinks with friends, chilling with a book, friends playing the guitar by candle light while there is an electricity break (happened last year and was a great evening), the man of your dreams serenading you while you stand on the balcony in your silk night gown (never happened but a girl is always allowed to dream…).

I love drama

1 Jul

Normally I’m not a big fan of a product revue or promoting a product myself. Being a make up artist I know that you tend to idealize the brand you are working for. But these days I’m brand free and I discovered some magical product so I wanted to share its with you:

The Maybelline Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner

I love it because it comes with a brush that makes it easy to blend the gel eyeliner from very thick retro liner to thin discrete line. AND it keeps its promise!!!

The day I tried it on for the first time, I had a great laugh and then I cried for about three hours (no kidding). When I got home I looked in the mirror, my face was read and puffy… but … eyeliner was perfect. Exactly were I had put it. A few days later a friend of mine got married and I did her make up that day, After crying through the whole ceremony and kissing 200 crying people she still looked the same.

Bottom line: Being able to cry all day and still look gorgeous like a sixties icon? I like!
